Playing our part in an important national environmental project

Staff in the VSG Solutions Group are taking part in an exciting and rewarding biodiversity project which involves them looking out for the different kinds of life that you might find in our everyday environment and recording these finds on a dedicated nature recording app, iNaturalist.

What is biodiversity? Biodiversity refers to the variety of animals, plants, fungi and even microorganisms like bacteria that make up our natural world. Biodiversity supports everything in nature that we need to survive: food, clean water, medicine and shelter.

Why is VSG getting involved? The aim of National Highways, is to prevent the net loss of biodiversity through its activities. Traditionally, roads have compromised the quality of the environment and fragmented important habitats for wildlife. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

The VSG project has been set up here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/ biodiversity-and-our-roads-do-we-thrive-where-we-drive This is a place where we can see our shared biodiversity, as well as leader boards showing who has made the most observations - which could generate some healthy competition between depots!

You too can get involved? Simply download the iNaturalistUK app and start collecting photos and sounds of biodiversity in and around where you work, live and visit.
